I’m back online, thanks for staying tuned!
Ok, after having moved successfully to my new apartment home, I found that the hardest thing to move in Germany is after all your DSL Internet access. Believe it or not, I have been 4 weeks offline at home, due to the switch in providers I made at the same time as moving to a new apartment.
Pretty impossible! Everything else moved nicely and quickly with us, but after 20+ years having the land-line phone with the former monopolist Deutsche Telekom, I had decided it would be about time to switch to a competitor for price and service, and had selected the Munich local provider M-net. Not their fault, but the termination of the former contract took 4 weeks, before that they could not install my new phone line.
The reason I did not just terminate the old one and got a new contract was that I kept my land-line phone number of course.
Anyway, thanks for keeping Alpenglow subscribed, and be prepared for some new material coming soon!

Climate Change
Some weeks ago in the deepest cold of January I was driving by the large power plant north of Munich, which is an impressive sight even by daylight, and was facing a beautiful sunset which I never can resist, much less so when I have my camera and tripod in the car with me.
Now looking at this image, at first I wondered, is this nature photography? It could be argued that this is an architectural image, or at least a very technical subject. But my answer is that the main effect of this photo is caused by nature in the form of the sunset colors, so it definitely is nature photography.
But of course given we all have been educated by Al Gore about climate change I was still surprised how hard it was not to think about CO2 emissions when looking at this photograph.
Every period has it’s icons.
The real story is of course more complex – even if this power plant is fueled mainly by coal, it also is fueled by waste combustion, and is a co-generation power plant that also generates heat, which is used for heating and hot water generation within the Munich city district. I personally do believe the only way to get to a cleaner energy mix is to reduce power consumption wherever possible. Just changing the source for the energy will not work out in the long run.
This particular power plant actually won the “Power Plant Award” in 1993 for environmental compatibility. Standards might have changed since then and public awareness increased, but obviously some 15 years ago this one was not to blame, but to celebrate.
Times change.

Posting from Bavaria
Oh, before I forget – I am posting this blog from the German state of Bavaria. This lends itself to many immediate mental associations, and on a beautiful Sunday last June, when I started thinking about doing this blog and reserved the domain, I did take a picture of one very very Bavarian place. And yes, this is how it really looks like here.
The monastery itself is well known to locals and tourists alike, though they usually get much closer than this – they are famous for their own brew! It is located in the vicinity of the Ammersee lake, close to Munich. Find their website here: http://www.andechs.de/

The first day of the rest of my life (and yours too)
…and a new era, at least for me. Never considered blogging to be my type of thing, but having read many blogs over the last years, and having learned a lot, and laughed a lot, I decided to go down the same path as many did before and find me a place to share my thoughts, and in the case of this blog, my photos.
Being an amateur photographer enjoying being amateur only earning my money with my day job, I want to use this blog as my scrap book for ideas, photo sessions, learning experiences, reviews and bookmark collection. And of course I hope that someday somebody might find information here that is useful, giving me the chance to give back to the community a tiny fraction of what it has given to me.
